Batch: Masters Transport Planning and Management (Live Batch)

Description

Transportation system consists of fixed facilities, the flow entities and permits people and goods to overcome the friction of geographical space efficiently in order to participate in a timely manner in some desired activity. Urban milieu to a large extent depends on the performance of transportation system. Transport is widely recognized as fundamental to economic growth. Transport sector is an overlooked sector in developing countries such as Ethiopia. Like many Sub-Saharan African countries, Ethiopia is facing transport challenges.To overcome these and other development issues, Transport Planning and Management as the main field of study is crucial and is expected to play significant roles in the country. This draft curriculum, therefore, endeavors to fill this niche by equipping students with relevant transport planning and management skills. Generally, the envisaged program aims at satisfying the need for trained manpower capable of planning and managing the transportation sector of the government as well as private sector efficiently.

Each academic year is divided into two semesters. In the programme, special emphasis is given to core modules such as: Transportation System Development and Economics; Road Safety and Traffic Management; Fundamentals of Traffic Engineering; Transport Logistics and Operation Management; Transport Planning and Modelling; Public Transport System in the First Year(two semesters). In addition, modules on Internship; Transport Studio; and Research Proposal Development, proposal defence and related Presentations will be given in the Second Year First Semester; and Thesis Project in Second Year Second Semester. The program is set to be completed on a full time basis within a period of 24 months comprising of four semesters made up of 14 modules including thesis. The total ECTS of the programme is 115.

Exit Level Outcomes

After the completion of the Masters of Sciences (MSc) Program in Transport Management the Graduates will be able to:
a. understand the concepts of transportation system, transport development, and its principles;
b. acquire managerial and technical skills to tackle transport challenges and apply the same effectively as a transport professional;
c. critically undertake transportation research in terms of its major components, i.e., fixed facilities, flow entities and control system;
d. market transport services to clients and negotiate contracts, coordinate transport logistics as per requirements of transport entity and control consignment and dispatch documents according to operation guidelines , procedures and formats
e. design resource mobilization strategies, application of rules and regulations, the capacities of transport entities in terms of their reliability related to maintenance;
f. evaluate transport operations and prepare performance report for further decision making;
g. plan and design innovative interventions in terms of transportation policies, management procedures and operations; and
h. coordinate, as well as lead transport development projects and implementation programs in field-offices and transport research institutions.
