Batch: Masters Transport Planning and Management (Live Batch)

Description

Transportation is the movement of people, goods, animals and information from one place to the other. It creates valuable links between communities, regions, and the rest of the world. It is also the backbone of socio economic development of a nation by creating place and time utility. Urban milieu largely depends on the performance of transportation system. Transport is widely recognized as fundamental to economic growth. However, the transport sector is overlooked in developing countries like Ethiopia. Sub-Saharan African countries including Ethiopia are facing transport challenges. To overcome these and other development issues, Transport Planning and Management as the main field of study is crucial and is expected to play significant roles in the country. This curriculum, therefore, endeavors to fill this niche by equipping students with relevant transport planning and management skills.

Generally, the envisaged program aims at satisfying the need for trained human-power capable of planning and managing the transportation efficiently in government and private sector.

Each academic year is divided into two semesters. In the programme, modules such as Transportation System and Development, Fundamentals of Traffic Engineering, Fundamentals of Transport Economics; Road Safety and Traffic Management; Public Transport; Urban and Regional Planning, Transport Planning and Modelling; Logistics and Freight Transport; Transport Studio Project One and Two; Advanced Research Methods and Techniques, GIS for Transport, and Urbanisation and Urban Development will be delivered in Face-to-Face basis in the two years. In the second year, the batch will be divided in to two; the specialization with thesis and without thesis. The program is set to be completed on a full time basis within a period of 24 months comprising of four semesters (114 ECTS) for the thesis participants. On the other hand, non-thesis participants will have 18 months which have three semesters (90 ETCS) to complete the program.

Exit Level Outcomes

After the completion of the Masters of Sciences (MSc) Program in Transport Planning and Management, the Graduates will be able to:

  1. have critical understanding of the concepts and  principles of transportation system and development;
  2. acquire managerial and technical skills to tackle transport challenges and apply it in both government and private sector as a transport professional;
  3. undertake transportation research in order to solve the current and future transport  problems;
  4. conduct transport marketing to clients, negotiate transport contracts, and coordinate transport logistics in accordance with operation guidelines , procedures and standards
  5. undertake public and freight transport costing and pricing in both private and government transport sectors.
  6. comprehend and apply  transport policies, rules and regulations;
  7. evaluate transport operations  and  prepare performance report for further decision making;
  8. plan and implement alternative traffic management strategies to address transportation problems;
  9. coordinate and lead transport development projects and implementation programs in field, offices and transport research institutions.
  10. apply different models in order to forecast future transport demands and mobility requirements
  11. involve in transport planning and consultation activities in urban plan preparation and implementation;
  12. prepare transport plans such as mobility plans of cities and towns;
